Meningococcal Info
Meningococcal disease is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection. The disease is most commonly expressed as meningococcal meningitis, an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, or meningococcemia, the presence of bacteria in the blood. Recent research has shown that students living in residence halls, particularly first year students, are at a higher risk than University students overall.

Effective June 1, 2000, Maryland law requires that an individual enrolled in an institution of higher education in Maryland and residing in University student housing must be vaccinated against meningococcal disease. The student (or guardian if under the age of 18) may choose to waive the vaccine if they have reviewed information regarding the risks of meningococcal disease and sign a written waiver that he/she has chosen to waive vaccination.
