Move Over Big Guys. Here Comes the Mount
As one of the nation’s smallest NCAA Division I schools, you might think the Mount can’t really compete against the powerhouses.
Think again. Mount teams have gone up against Maryland, Georgetown, Duke, Boston College, Georgia Tech, and Villanovaand won.
Not impressed? Then consider this: More than a dozen Mount athletes have competed in the Olympic Games; one runner, Peter Rono, ’92, brought home gold for his sizzling performance in the 1500-meter dash.
Our men’s basketball team has gone to the NCAA tournament four times; our women’s team won three straight tournament titles and earned two automatic berths to the NCAA tournament. Along the way, it was also named among the nation’s top 25 academic teams.
Lacrosse is also becoming a Mount powerhouseour men’s team earned its first trip to the NCAA tournament in 2003 losing in the round of 16 to the University of Virginia, the eventual national champion. The women’s team has won back-to-back Northeast Conference titles and earned its first trip to the NCAA tournament in 2004, losing to eventual national champion the University of Virginia in the round of 16.
Who Says Only Athletes Can Move Mountains?
Not us. We offer more than 23 intramural and recreational sports to keep you moving just as much as the varsity athletes. Choose from flag football, indoor volleyball, one-on-one basketball, or a dozen other intramural sports. Either way, you’re sure to get in tons of exercise and make plenty of new friends.
Prefer enjoying nature to playing games? The Mount’s got you covered. Our 1,400-acre campus is filled with places where you can become one with nature. Try cross-country skiing. Time yourself on a morning jog. Go rock climbing or biking or rollerblading.
On the Mount, it doesn’t matter how you move, just as long as you move.
Academics vs. Athletics? No Competition
What about the competition between studies and sports? For Mount athletes, academics win out. We’re happy to report that our student athletes do as well in the classroom as they do on the playing fields, with GPAs, SATs, and retention and graduation rates equal to or better than the rest of our students.
In fact, according to U.S. News & World Report, the Mount ranks fifth in the nation when it comes to graduating student athletes. (That’s better than Duke and Stanford.)
Our Athletic Facilities Are Almost As Good As Our Athletes
The Knott Athletic Recreation Convocation Complex (better known as “the ARCC”) cost $11 million to build and provides 100,000 square feet of athletic space, including a 3,500-seat arena, four multi-purpose indoor courts, an indoor jogging trail, racquetball courts, a six-lane swimming pool, and weight and aerobics rooms.
