The Honors Program at Mount St. Mary's

The Honors Program offers talented and motivated students an educational experience that integrates curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular learning in both interdisciplinary and major areas of study. Honors courses feature individual attention and close faculty-student interaction in a setting of small classes. The Honors sequence fulfills core requirements in the first six semesters of study and culminates in an intensive research project in the major during senior year.

Honors at Mount St. Mary's University consists of two distinct programs:

  1. the Freshman-Sophomore Honors Program for talented incoming students
  2. the College Scholars Program for academically gifted juniors and seniors

During freshman and sophomore years, Honors Students complete three semesters of study in the Western Civilization series. (There is some variation in this series for students majoring in computer science, math, or the natural sciences.) In the fall of sophomore year, Honors Students also take an Honors Philosophy class focused on classical and Christian authors. In the spring of sophomore year, Honors Students enroll in a Philosophy course that is clustered with a course either in natural science or in social science.

Formal acceptance in the Scholars Program occurs at the beginning of junior year. It is open to students already in Honors, to gifted transfer students, and to those who have compiled an outstanding academic record during their first four semesters at the Mount. The fall of junior year features an Honors Theology course, while in the spring the focus is on a study of American Experience. Seniors Honors Students research and present a specialized project in their major field of study.

The Honors Program promotes an atmosphere of collegiality among its members through a series of socials, dinners, lectures and field trips under the auspices of the George Henry Miles Honor Society. The Honors Program also encourages students to offer their talents to the College and to the local community through service programs sponsored by The George Henry Miles Honor Society.

Scholarships

Mount Saint Mary's accepts forty students each year into the Freshman Honors Program. Students who qualify for the Freshman Honors Program are offered academic scholarships ranging between $11,000 - $12,500 annually.
