When editors refer to style, they usually do not mean an individual’s writing style; rather, they mean editorial style the guidelines a writer uses to enhance the reader’s understanding of the written message. Editorial style includes consistent use of spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, as well as the selection of headings and the use of numbers.
The following guidelines are often called conventions because they represent a desired conventional presentation used in academic publishing and professional writing. These are the general guidelines the Office of Communications uses in the editing and production of college communications. For all correspondence, reports, and other communication, all campus offices should use these guidelines consistently. For a more comprehensive resource, refer to the Associated Press Stylebook, and Webster’s Dictionary.
Mount St. Mary’s College and Seminary publishes a variety of communications tools. Many of these are distributed to the same readers. To avoid inconsistency among our many communications and potential confusion for our readers, the Office of Communications has created this style guide as part of its graphic identity program. The style guide also discusses matters of usage, style, and design standards particular to the Mount. The director of communications and marketing is available to help college and seminary writers and editors with these conventions. As you plan your publications and develop a production schedule, please allow the time necessary for this editorial process.
To ensure clarity and consistency of messages, you will need to clear all printed material that will be mailed off campus, or have broad campus distribution, through the Office of Communications. If you have questions, please call the director of communications and marketing at ext. 4634.
