A seminary should be a spiritual place, a way of life, an atmosphere that fosters and ensures a process of formation so that the person who is called to the priesthood by God may become, with the sacrament of orders, a living image of Jesus Christ, head and shepherd of the church (Pope John Paul II, Pastores Dabo Vobis #42)Mount St. Marys strives to be such a spiritual place, fostering a way of life and providing an atmosphere for excellent priestly formation in all its aspects: human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral. Founded
in 1808 by the French immigrant missionary priest, Father John Dubois, the Mount has a long, proven history and solid tradition of excellence in the formation of candidates for the priesthood.
Mount St. Marys aims to establish a foundation within the seminarians for a lifetime of priestly ministry within the Church. This foundation is an intimate relationship with God the Father in Jesus Christ His Son through the Holy Spirit, a relationship nourished by Scripture and Tradition, celebrated in the sacraments, especially the Eucharist, and marked by a sincere devotion to Mary, the Seminarys patroness.
The Mounts clear mission is to train men to become more like Christ the Good Shepherd, men of deep humility and genuine pastoral charity. The Seminary prepares the seminarians to share in a special way in the three-fold office of Christ: teaching the Gospel, celebrating the divine mysteries, and shepherding Gods people.
For almost 200 years, Mount St. Marys has prepared men for priestly life and ministry throughout the United States. It continues to thrive, helping men to follow Christ more closely and to become more like the Good Shepherd in order better to serve the Church and the world as priests.
Current and past Seminarians can keep up with what's going on at the Mount Seminary by reading the Seminary newsletter in the Publications section. Seminary alumni and friends who wish to provide financial support can download a Seminary Ways to Give brochure.
