The education department is committed to a broad and integrated liberal arts core as a foundation for teachers at all levels. Through this curriculum, prospective teachers will acquire essential tools of analytical thought and self-expression, gain and integrate knowledge in the major disciplines, gain an understanding of other cultures and other times, seek to understand the various facets of moral and ethical problems, and reach a high degree of personal fulfillment.
To complement this core, a sequence of professional courses and field experiences allows prospective teachers to gain general and specialized knowledge in one or more content areas, gain knowledge about past and current theories of education, develop a thorough knowledge of child growth and development, and develop the appropriate skills for effective classroom teaching.
Elementary Education Major
The program in elementary education is designed to prepare students to teach at the elementary school level, grades 1-6, middle school, and meets certification requirements in many states. Because of the specific sequence of course offerings in the program, it is necessary for students to enroll in the education program in the freshman year, or at the latest, at the beginning of the sophomore year. Students entering the program after that time may not be able to graduate with their class as an elementary education major; they may be required to do additional coursework. The same principle applies to transfer students.
In addition to the core curriculum and other related course requirements, the elementary education student must take a total of 52 credit hours in the professional course sequence. The courses are: EDUC 100, 202, 206, 210, 228, 303, 305, 313, 316, 329, 330, 331, 410, 418, 421.
Also required are MATH 108 and 109 and 3 courses in general science.

Elementary Education and Special Education (Dual) Major

The program in art education prepares students to be certified in art (K through grade 12). Students complete a major in fine arts with certification to teach. They also take specific courses and field experiences at the elementary and secondary levels.

The programs in secondary education are designed to prepare students to teach at the secondary level in English, social studies or math, and to meet requirements for certification in most states (grades 7-12). Each student who plans to teach at the secondary level must have a major in an academic subject field. An advisor in the department of education will be assigned upon the student's admission to a teacher education program. The student is responsible for knowing and meeting department requirements and deadlines, as well as all graduation requirements of the major department and of the college.
A minimum of 37 credit hours in education is required. Secondary education students take EDUC 100, 210, 303, 305, 316, 317, 417, 421, 426 and 427.

Education Minor
Any student in good academic standing at the university may minor in education. The minor consists of 18 credits, which are fulfilled by taking the following courses: EDUC 100, 206, 210, 305, 316 and either 228 or 202.
Students applying for admission to the teacher education program must take the Praxis I exams and meet the qualifying scores for the state of Maryland. The student must designate Mount St. Mary's University as a score recipient and have passing scores on file in the education office prior to registering for 300-level courses in the major.
To become certified, students must successfully complete the teacher education program and meet the qualifying scores for Praxis II. Generally, this occurs during Internship II. Once again, the Mount and the Maryland State Department of Education must be designated as score recipients.
If the student plans to teach in a state other than Maryland, it is the student's responsibility to research the specific certification requirements of that state.
Requirements for Entering Teacher Education Programs:
- Submit, no later than the second semester of the sophomore year, the declaration of major form to the dean.
- Achieve cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better, at least a 2.0 in professional courses, and satisfy the college's writing competency.
- Participate in an assessed interview.
- Students will need to take the Praxis I examination and have obtained the minimum scores required by the state of Maryland before entering the program in the Junior year. Students may apply in writing to the chair of the department for an extension of one semester for this requirement, if special circumstances pertain.
- All courses prefixed EDUC or SPED must be passed with a minimum grade of C-. Other courses taken as part of an approved program of study may be subject to this requirement, as determined by the education department.
The Education Advisory Committee determines acceptance or rejection of the application
