Education majors gain practical experience through extensive on-site teaching opportunities in local Frederick County partner schools. Our close partnership with these schools means you will be closely monitored and guided as you undertake your field-based student teaching.
Requirements for the Teacher Internship
- Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, and 2.0 in professional courses.
- Completion of Praxis I tests at required Maryland score level.
- Recommendation of the Education Advisory Committee.
Students must provide their own transportation to student teaching assignments.
Professional Development Schools (PDS)
Students who are accepted into the teacher education program are immersed in course work and teaching students on-site at one of our professional development schools. Preparation in a PDS enables the school system and the college to work together to improve teaching and learning for all students, K-16.
In the first semester of the teacher internship, students work with an experienced teacher in a PDS each week while focusing academic studies on specific teaching methods in the basic skill areas. In the second semester of the internship, students work full time with a mentor teacher in close consultation with college supervisors. Upon graduation, students are expected to demonstrate standards-based teaching that is measured in part through portfolio assessment and evaluation of teaching performance.
