Master of Education with Concentration in Elementary Education

The Master of Education in Elementary Education is structured to allow the certified teacher to earn an advanced degree on a part-time evening and summer schedule.

Master of Education in Reading: Reading Specialist K-12

This program is designed with an emphasis on teaching the English Language learner. The concentration leads to advanced certification as a reading specialist, K-12, from the Maryland State Department of Education. There is increasing recognition of the importance of reading specialists today in light of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Reading specialists will be called upon to lead schools’ efforts to strengthen early intervention and target at risk students K-12.

Study Option #5

Master of Arts in Teaching with Initial Certification in Elementary Education

This study option is designed for those who seek an initial Maryland teaching certificate at the elementary grade level (grades 1-6, middle) and a graduate degree. This program serves students who did not earn a baccalaureate degree in education and who seek to become elementary school teachers.

The program of study includes the graduate courses listed below plus undergraduate liberal arts credits as mandated by the state of Maryland. The director of graduate studies reviews each applicant’s undergraduate transcript and determines for each the number of credits required. Some of the courses require a field experience component in which students observe or teach in a classroom setting several times during the semester. Students are advised to refer to the M.Ed./MAT Courses section of the catalog as they plan their course sequence.

All 500-level courses can be completed in the evenings except MEDUC 518. MEDUC 518 includes student teaching obligations that can only be completed during the day. This requirement involves full-time classroom work and is completed in the latter stages of the student’s program. Teacher Internships should be completed only in a Professional Development School in Frederick County (MD). Student teaching can be completed only during normal public school hours.

*An “Application for Teacher Internship” (MEDUC 518) must be submitted to the director of teacher education no later than February 15 for the fall semester or September 15 for the spring semester.

Undergraduate Liberal Arts Distribution Requirements

The state of Maryland requires students to have completed a distribution of liberal arts courses before initial certification can be awarded. The director of graduate studies evaluates each student’s transcript to determine which liberal arts requirements have already been satisfied and which must be completed to earn certification. Students may complete these requirements at the Mount or at any accredited two- or four-year college. Students who take these courses at the Mount register through the education department office and pay the lower part-time graduate fee. Students who choose to take the courses elsewhere are advised to consult with their advisor prior to registration.

Study Option #6

Master of Arts in Teaching with Dual Certification in Elementary & Special Education

This graduate degree with dual certification program is designed for those individuals seeking initial Maryland teaching certificates in elementary education (grades 1-6, middle) and generic special education (grades 1-8) as well as the Master of Arts in Teaching degree. This study option serves those who did not earn a baccalaureate degree in education and who seek to become elementary school or special education teachers.

The content areas include biology, business education, English, French, history, Latin, mathematics, social studies and Spanish.
